  • Coordinator EDS program for Mental Health Counselors. - This program is a licensure program for Mental Health Counselors. Students apply to the program in the second or third semesters of their masters program. About ten students apply each year. The program graduates about 50% of the matriculates. Students are accepted based on successful competition of fieldwork in the masters program at the Core Campus (IUPUI or IUB), GRE and GPA. The Capstone Project requirement is completed using a national test of counselor competence and a committee review of demonstrated scope o practice competencies. Our students place well above the national mean.

The specialist degree program accepts students from both the IUPUI and the IU campuses. Students use the program to complete their licensure requirements as Mental Health Counselors. While all students complete a semester of residency, most students finish the program a part-time basis. Most Ed. S. students reside in communities across the Midwest, however some commute from both the East Coast and West Coast to complete Saturday seminar requirements.

Advising, Program Approval, Matriculation, Completion of the Capstone Requirements, and meeting graduation requirements are difficult for students whose connection with the program is minimal. In academic year 2008, to facilitate communication among this demographically diverse group of students, I had developed two new media for electronic communication. Starting in the fall 2009 Ed. S. students have access to a blog through which they can make comments and ask questions in a public forum. Students and faculty can review and comment on currently posted comments and questions. The blog is secure in that users must use their Indiana University ID to read and append comments to the blog.

In addition to the blog, starting in the fall of 2009, students have access to a Wiki Program. The Wiki differentiates itself from the blog in that each posting is reviewed for accuracy by the program coordinator. The purpose of the Wiki is to share advice, procedures, and processes that will facilitate student’s matriculation to the program. This Wiki meets two requirements 1) it provides a broad range of suggestions available to the whole EDS community and 2) it facilitates instant review by the Program Coordinator assures that information is both complete and accurate.

Use of the both the Wiki and the Ed. S. Blog have been limited during the fall semester, but usage seems to increase each month. The Program Coordinator will do an evaluation and necessary modifications to the Wiki and the Blog during the summer of 2009.
  • Chair Counseling program MS/Ed.S Admissions Committee - The committee, composed of three faculty, meets twice each year to review and select candidates for admission to our programs. Last year the committee reviewed about 90 applicants, we accepted 60 and about 40 matriculated.
  • Web based database program to document Ms, EdS, and Phd student field experience activity for certification. - All our doctoral students and fifty percent of our students seek certification as mental health counselors. The faculty is required to certify the required the 1000 hours of field experience associated with this requirement. I have had the responsibility for the development of this database program. The program provides a web based data entry for the students to enter a broad array of counseling services that are tracked using national standards. There are about 35 variables tracked in each month of a student's field experience. The system provides a paper audit, certified by instructors and field experience personnel, to verify the data the students submit to the data base through the web. The system is reviewed by our national certification board during their site visits. This year I have developed new web based reports that students can use to monitor their field experiences and faculty can use to track students field experiences by class and section. ETS took responsibility for the maintenance of the hardware and web server to service this system in Spring Semester of 2004. Unfortunately the system crashed during the summer of 2004. ETS at that time also lost the backup of both the program and the data. I had maintained an electronic copy of the data through spring 2004. The Counseling Program maintains a paper copy of the data for accreditation and state audit demands. I no longer teach during the summer. During the Fall Semester I had to rewrite the prog
